What Indian Translation Companies Look for in A Translator

Translation is an emerging profession in India. It has a lot going for it in terms of the potential to grow, but at the same time, there are many teething troubles as well. One of their troubles is to do with finding good translators.

Indian translation companies are often in a double bind, caught between their fast growth and the acute shortage of trained resources.

In this month’s newsletter, we look at the top five qualities Indian translation companies look for in a translator:

1. A sound knowledge of both the source and target languages. This should seem like an obvious quality to look for a translator, but it bears repetition. Multilingualism is common in a country like India. Many people speak more than one language. However, that doesn’t automatically qualify one to be a translator.

A translator has to be a good reader and an even better writer. You need to be able to quickly understand the source text and accurately convey the meaning in the target language. This is not something that every casual speaker of a language can do.

To acquire a sound knowledge of both the source and target languages, aspiring translators must read diverse texts in both the languages such as newspapers, advertisements, literary books, textbooks, and so on.

2. Research skills. Yes, a translator also needs to be a good researcher. Here’s how Tanmayee Khire, CEO of BITS, puts it, “The capability of a translator to carry out proper, in-depth research about the subject matter of a text is very important. Especially in a country like India, where most formal translation courses do not provide the option of specializing in a particular domain.”

Often, in India, translators have to learn about a subject on the job. Hence, their research skills become nearly as important as their linguistic skills.

3. A curiosity about other cultures. A translator essentially serves as a bridge between two cultures. It’s not merely words that are being conveyed across languages, but the spirit of the words. Often, this is easier said than done, as equivalent words are hard to find. It’s only our knowledge of the two cultures that then enables us to understand the meaning and then convey it in words that make sense in the target language.

For instance, a particular gesture, a way of speaking, or a food may be intrinsic to a culture and it does contain words for it. But the other culture simply doesn’t have this mannerism or food, and hence lacks the words for it. A translator then has to figure out how they can convey the meaning, using perhaps very different words. It’s a brain-racking exercise, but one that translators routinely encounter.

An openness and a healthy respect towards another culture lets us learn many a new thing. Foster a sense of curiosity for other cultures – it is part of the job profile of a translator. 

4. Knowledge of CAT tools. Khire reckons this is highly important as CAT tools are now widely used in the industry. In her words again, “The translator must be well-versed with at least one CAT tool and have a basic knowledge of a couple of others. It always proves to be an advantage when onboarding them.”

Tech tools are now the allies of translators. To cope with the increasing volumes and ever-shortening turnaround times, translators must work with tools such as translation memory and machine translation (MT).

5. Good communication and project management skills. In the end, a translator stands in the middle of marketing, sales, and content projects that involve working with many people in an organization. The translator has to be able to communicate efficiently and on time if they need any clarifications or if they ned to flag some issue. Else, it can affect timelines and cause undue delays.

Clients usually remember the experience of working with a translator more than anything else. When there is clear communication at every step, clients feel assured by the transparency. They feel in control of the project rather than when they only know about an issue towards the end of the project.

A good translator combines all of these qualities we have listed so far. But above all, Indian companies are looking for translators who are open to learning, adapting, and growing with the company.

Speaking of initiatives, I hope you have considered participating in the Stand Out – Be Outstanding Competition, an initiative of the Association of Translation Companies in partnership with CITLoB.

Apart from this initiative, this is a particularly important month for all of us. Our second biannual election has just been announced and it is yet another opportunity for us to demonstrate the democratic nature of our industry body. I would like to urge all of you to consider running for one of the five posts or propose the name of someone you feel would make a deserving candidate. Apart from the post of the President, elections would be held for the four regional vice-presidents (north, south, east and west). It is time for newer faces to step in and show the world the depth of our industry.

I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that you can now advertise in IndoVox for a very nominal fee. IndoVox is circulated to over 1000 subscribers from across the world and includes language industry players of various sizes and needs. We will feature only a limited number of companies per issue to ensure adequate focus and visibility.

Let me take this opportunity to send all of you my best wishes for a successful new financial year. Going by how things have opened up in the past couple of months, including the fact that most states have done away with most Covid restrictions, I think it is safe to say that the worst is behind us and this the closest we have been to the old normal. At CITLoB, we want to make the most of this opportunity and plans are afoot to for something special across zones. Stay tuned as we break the news at things progress.

Last month, I had informed you about the Partnership Agreement we signed with the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), United Kingdom. This month, I am going to urge you to participate in the Stand Out – Be Outstanding Competition. It is a great platform that will give you invaluable visibility with ATC Member companies that are keen on building partnerships with Indian LSPs. This is your chance to be noticed and I am sure you will make the most of it.

For those of you who have not noticed it yet, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that we now have paid contributors in IndoVox. This is a step we took to enhance the quality of content we serve you. In that sense, you are more than welcome to suggest topics that are of interest to you, and we will surely accommodate as many of them as we can.

India’s Voice: The Next Frontier in Localization

Indians love to talk. Talking and listening is how we learn, do business, find out about things – in short, lead our lives. We’d much rather ask someone for information rather than read up on it.

And now, we have begun to talk to our devices. And how! Hindi is the second most used voice on Google Assistant globally. We have been using voice to search for things, get tasks done on our devices, and more. Since the pandemic, voice technologies have found new space in our lives as they enable contactless experiences.

For us in the localization world, voice is exciting. It’s a new frontier. It brings new opportunities and, of course, challenges.

Voice is exciting because of what it enables:

1. It’s three times faster than typing.

2. Even people who are not gadget-savvy can handle voice-led tools.

3. It’s especially relevant to people with limited literacy and older people.

4. Voice can go where video cannot. In network-limited situations, a voice message or a voice-led interaction is still possible, while you might not be able to use video.

Voice brings many opportunities:

Voice can create a level playing field on the Internet, which text-led technologies can never do. People of all ages and geographies can conduct a voice transaction, as it mimics a conversation.

What does this mean in terms of the opportunities it opens up? It can give a huge boost to e-commerce growth as a majority of the smartphones are equipped to handle voice technology. Even people accessing the Internet for the first time can quickly start engaging in e-commerce.

Voice assistants can guide people in their purchase decisions on an e-commerce portal. It comes close to building a human connection with a brand and can help in building a strong brand recall.

Apart from e-commerce, voice has an important role to play in the fields of edutech, medical, travel, and so on. For instance, universities have begun to install voice-guided assistants to help students find things on campus. Students are listening to podcasts to catch up with lectures they might have missed. Students can even take a viva or an oral examination remotely because of voice technologies.

In the medical field, doctors can use voice to record their notes while they continue to focus on the patient. Touch screen monitors with voice recognition software in every patient room can soon be here. Doctors and staff can use the tool to quickly record the patient’s daily readings and access it easily as well.

But opportunities come with challenges, and that’s the fun part. In the Indian context, it’s mainly to do with the multitude of languages for which voice technologies have to be trained. Because a conversation can be free-flowing, a user might bring in un-recognized words, accents, and other languages, too, leaving voice recognition tools flummoxed.

In a single sentence, there might be more than one language with no standard grammatical construction.

There’s also the problem of background noise, which would invariably exist if a voice-led app needs to be used outdoors.

Lastly, the technology itself will have to be kept affordable for mass adoption.

Localization providers have an important role to play in bringing voice in Indian languages to every device. Voice recognition software must be as viable and efficient in every Indian language as it is in English. App developers must work in sync with localization companies to understand the nuances of how Indians use voice and accordingly design tools.

Dear friends,

As we come to the end of yet another financial year, I am glad to see the positive outlook coming back. Across industries, including our very own, things seem to be looking up again with most feeling that they have or will achieve pre covid levels. That is indeed great news for all of us who have gone through some tough times over the past two years.

The big news this month is the Partnership Agreement we signed with the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), United Kingdom. Raisa McNab, the dynamic CEO of the association was very vocal about how ATC members are keen to find reliable Indian language services partners and how this partnership will also help them expand their services to India and profit from the booming Indian market. This, again, is a great opportunity for CITLoB members and I would urge all of you to reach out to ATC members to explore mutually beneficial partnerships. Needless to say, that the office bearers of CITLoB would only be happy to help in any way you need us to.

I cannot end without thanking all of you for the overwhelming response to the webinar we hosted this month. Not only did the suggestion for the topic come from one of our members, but we also had an unprecedented number of questions and signups. Keep up the spirit people. We are going to need more of that as we move along.

The translation industry globally saw a decade of growth come to a slow pace since 2020. However now with the industry stabilizing it is going through a significant change not just thanks to the pandemic but also as a result of the evolution of technology.

Many businesses are developing a different approach in the way they do business. Everyone is online since the pandemic which had made the companies relook at their delivery areas and serve customers without any geographical limitations.
